In this course, we were assigned to different business practices to develop as Adidas subsidiaries. My project is about sports environment design, and I use archetypal characters (shapeshifters) and landscapes (caves) as inspirations to develop brand personality.
After researching the business, I came up with DARVIN, a sport architecture firm that designs and builds strong stadia. The brand strives to be stable, innovative, and reliable; therefore, its visual identity follows a modern and architectural style. Then, I create a range of visual elements for the brand such as 6 different types of logos, colour schemes, typography use, icons, patterns, etc., and synthesize them using the form of a “folded brandscape,” as shown below.
Working Process
The Graphic Design Skills course provides students with skills and knowledge related to logo design for business identity and branding.
For a fictional enterprise (developed from real-world business practices), students work to define company values, assets and spaces, while they develop fundamental skills for graphic and typographic creation related to effective logo design.
Students improve their hand- and vector-based drawing skills for a reiterative approach to design development. They practice communicative skills necessary for in-house studio discussions and client-facing presentations for the different types of logos they produce (pictorial, abstract, emblem, monogram…)
Then, through further explorations of color, contrast, pattern, image, type, place and people, students extend the logo into a fully branded environment - a printed brandscape.
By the end of the course, students should have a solid understanding of logo design principles and the skills necessary to create and present memorable, distinctive, original, suitable and reproducible logos for a variety of business practices.
