Mixed Reality for Robot Monitoring and Optimization

Industrial robots play a crucial role in modern manufacturing, yet their control and monitoring interfaces often remain complex and limited to traditional screen-based systems. As mixed reality technologies advance, they open new possibilities for creating more natural and immersive ways for humans to interact with machines. Mixed reality integrates digital content into real-world surroundings, enabling users to engage with robotic systems more naturally and intuitively. This context motivates the exploration of how emerging technologies like Unity and Microsoft HoloLens can transform the way we visualize and control industrial robots.

Our project, “Mixed Reality For Robot Monitoring and Optimization”, presents an approach that integrates ABB RobotStudio, Unity, and HoloLens into a unified system for immersive robot interaction. RobotStudio serves as the platform for simulating and operating the robot, while Unity creates a 3D interactive interface that mirrors the robot’s movements in real time. By using HoloLens, the digital robot model can be placed directly into the user’s environment, allowing observation from multiple perspectives and natural interaction. This setup not only synchronizes robot behavior across virtual and physical spaces but also demonstrates the potential of mixed reality to make industrial robotics more accessible, engaging, and effective.
