XanhSM Airport Mobility Solution
Ground transportation is a critical part of airport operations, providing the main way for travelers to leave. Ride hailing services have become one of the largest providers of this transport, offering the convenience of booking taxis anytime through a phone application.
However, convenience comes with challenges. From simple things such as unclear pickup locations due to confusing airport layout, to booking demand rises sharply during peak hours, leading to long pickup vehicles queues. Passengers could face extended waits, both to be matched with a driver, and to be picked up even though both may already be at the airport.
To address these issues, airports and ride hailing companies experiment with operational strategies such as having ready to pickup taxis and positioning taxi fleets nearby. However, balancing passenger wait times with driver utilization remains difficult. Drivers staged near the airport may wait hours during off peak periods before being assigned, creating inefficiencies on both sides.
This project evaluates the current operational efficiency of BlueSM at Tan Son Nhat Airport, Terminal 1 Lane C. Using simulation programming, we measure key performance metrics, establish a baseline of current operations, and test improvement ideas. The goal is to identify strategies that enhance efficiency and improve passenger and driver experience.
