Blue Beneath is a world-building and character design project I created for my Design Discipline Skills - Illustration course. The name also serves as the potential title if the project were ever adapted into a cartoon series.
Set in a speculative, post-catastrophe future, Blue Beneath imagines a world where Earth has been devastated by a massive global flood. Sea levels have risen dramatically, submerging nearly the entire planet and leading to the collapse of most human civilisations. Yet humanity, refusing to be conquered by nature, begins to rebuild and strives to survive against all odds.
The story follows a group of sea voyagers whose job is to help people retrieve lost artifacts buried beneath the waves, deliver important parcels across the oceans, and fend off dangerous sea monsters that roam the deep. As they journey across the endless sea, they slowly begin to uncover the forgotten history of humanity and reflect on the achievements of the past.
Through their trials and adventures, the crew members also grow closer as they learn more about one another’s pasts, struggles, and dreams. Over time, they form a strong bond as a found family. Together, these voyagers are called the Barnacrew.
