“Towards the Lost Home” is a project/campaign about the captivating natural behaviour in sea turtles called “natal homing”. While doing research about sea turtles, I have come across this intriguing yet mysterious term. Natal homing is a process where sea turtles, as well as many other marine creatures, leverage their advanced sensing to find the seashore where they were born and lay their own eggs there, creating an endless cycle. It’s believed that when sea turtles are born, they retain a significantly detailed and precise recollection of the unique magnetic signature of that seashore. Then, in the event of nesting, sea turtles will use their highly sensitive ability to sense the Earth’s magnetic field to locate and navigate their very first natal beach in an accurate way. Despite the magical sound of this behaviour, natal homing is actually an ongoing study that still remains questions and mysteries. Therefore, the objective of Towards the Lost Home is not only to spread education and appreciation towards natal homing but also to ignite inspiration and curiosity from researchers to join in dissecting this extraordinary process.
