This “Authentic performance of trainee interpreters in a social work context: A reflection” project focuses on reflecting on the performance of Vietnamese RMIT University Translating & Interpreting (T&I) students during online simultaneous interpreting sessions for a social work-related talk show series. The goal is to identify the strengths and weaknesses of interpreters in terms of T&I skills; from that, the project can assess the benefits of joining RMIT T&I training programs.
The process:
1. Data collection: Gathering information from the interpreters, and the facilitator of the talk show series.
2. Data analysis (3 stages): Utilize Baker (2011), Newmark (Cragie & Pattison 2018), and Morini (2008)
+ Pre-translation: Evaluate the interpreter’s preparation before their interpreting sessions.
+ During-translation: Identify the common challenges easily encountered during an online interpreting session. Analyze the strategies interpreters have implemented to overcome obstacles and areas that require improvement combined with suggestions for better interpretation.
+ Post translation: Assess pragmatic force to examine the quality of the interpretation.
3. Post-data-analysis:
+ Finalise the findings and highlight the benefit of joining the RMIT T&I training program
